A Modern Bedroom

Sometimes I get texts from friends or family asking for my design advice. Usually it's for clothes but every once in awhile I get consulted on home decor.

This past weekend, I had a text from my friend Jen asking for help on choosing a duvet cover. The decision turned into designing her whole bedroom. I've only done a mood board for a room once or twice, but I felt confident enough in my skills to put one together for her. Besides it's not like I'm a professional and worst case scenario... she hates it and begrudges me for the rest of our lives.

A Modern Bedroom

They already have the offset striped duvet cover from West Elm, so she asked me to put together something that revolved around that. I'm also pretty certain they still have the Malm furniture from Ikea so I wanted to make sure I incorporated that as well, without making everything clash.

I couldn't decide which mirror or rug to pick. I thought the yellow and white rug would maybe be too much pattern thrown together with the cover and pillows but it just looked so cool, I couldn't bring myself to delete it.

I also initially liked a warm wood mirror to go with the dresser and bed, but the gold one had such a cool texture and went well with the retro vibe. But then I always have a soft spot for captain mirrors so.... yeah.

Lastly, their bedroom doesn't get a ton of light so I tried to keep the accessories either white or yellow (except for the cool retro chair).

And... now I'm questioning my whole design idea for our room.

More Sister Sister Style

You'll notice that both days I've styled her with a purse. Usually we don't bring purses to Disneyland, but it just completes the outfit doesn't it? I also like that this is sorta mixing patterns but not really  because they both have that wintery lodge feel.

P.S. I've crocheted a scarf for her that looks exactly like that. It looks great if you guys can imagine it. Because I don't have pictures. Are you surprised?

Sister Style Part 2

Now I know why my parents used to make sure we had plenty of Barbies and Cabbage Patch Dolls to go around. Whatever one sister has, it's pretty much a guarantee that the other 2 will want the same.

So of course when my baby sister saw that I had styled myself here and here and then my older sister here and here, she of course wanted her own styling for our Disneyland trip.

You've got mail

I love getting mail... whether it's a note from a friend, a package from my family or that darling sweater I had to order for Allie because it's just too cute. Emails just aren't as exciting anymore.

But I have one gripe about the mail system these days - specifically UPS, Fed Ex and On Trac.

I think their training for the job is basically just ding dong ditching.

Day 1: Practice ringing the doorbell and running away.

Day 2: Congratulations, you're ready to start delivering packages.

Seriously, whatever happened to signing for packages? I'd hate for something to get stolen just because I didn't hear the UPS guy chuck a package at our doorstop as he drove by without stopping the truck.

Okay, I exaggerate but it seriously seems that way sometimes.

I'll be back in a few days with another fashion-y post because I'm in the mood for it and because my baby sister wants to be styled too. Shocker, right?

Sister Style Day 2

This style post is a little more in line with who my sister, brother-in-law and nephew are. My bro-in-law is an IT guy and I'm pretty certain he owns at least one (if not more) Star Wars shirt. I wouldn't be surprised if he did wear it to Disneyland.

My nephew is well on his way to becoming a Disney fanatic (if my sisters and I have anything to say about it) so it was fitting to have a Mickey Mouse shirt to match the ears he'll probably be wearing.

As much as we love Disneyland, my sisters and I wouldn't actually wear Disney shirts. (Well, I think my older sis did once with her hubs.) But I think this time we're going to go for "fashionably comfy" instead of "Disneyland geeky."

Sister Style Day 1

Once my sister saw how I had styled myself and Sarah, she did what all sisters do when they see something cool that their sisters have - she wanted one for herself. So she text'd me demanding that I do a mock-up for our Disneyland trip. Okay, so she wasn't demanding but I still got to work right away because this - styling people - is one of my favoritest things to do!!!

Whenever I do these style posts, I try to pick things that I know this person would like or wear. In my sisters case, it's essentially like styling myself because she loves to wear dangly chandelier earrings, scarves, and comfortable clothing. That about sums up my closet.

Anyway, this outfit mash up is a little more matchy matchy but I'll be back in a day or two with something more fitting with this little family and their personalities.

A play kitchen for me. I mean, Allie.

One of Allie's favorite things to do is pull the dishes out of the cupboard and play with them. I decided after picking them up for the umpteenth time, we are going to make a play kitchen for her Christmas gift. Brian thought she might be too young but I reminded him that she'll be 16 months when Christmas rolls around and even if she doesn't want to play with it right away, I will.

Of course, I turned to Pinterest for some ideas and inspiration...

I loved the look and colors of this one. All the accent colors in my kitchen are red so I loved the idea of her stuff matching mine.

I really liked the layout of this one that John and Sherry did over at YHL. Every kitchen needs a fridge, especially one that has magnetic paint so you can put some cool looking magnets on it!

This one was a reader redesign from YHL. Butcher block counters (much like the ones I wish I had in my own kitchen) and a cool vintage looking stove painted a different color would make it super cool. It helps that Brian brought home a slab of butcher block from his last job.

One last thing that I'm very excited about is all of the play food and utensils that she can get from doting grandparents and aunties (hint hint :).

As far as where to start, I decided to check out Habitat for Humanity the other day to see if they had any entertainment centers or spare cabinets that could be turned into play kitchens. Unfortunately, they had some but they were $30-60. After chatting with Brian, we realized we might be able to design and build something from scratch for much less than that.

So when it's all said and done, it's okay if I want to play with this kitchen more than Allie right?

Right?

Anyone?

5 Fashion Trends I Can't Get On Board With

I love fashion. In my past life (like before I got married and had a baby), I was ready to move to New York to pursue a career as a buyer. Like Rachel's job on Friends. That was like my dream job. Anyway, life happened so now I just pin fashionable outfits while sitting in my oversized tee and leggings.

Still, there are some things that I can't stand - although some of these things look great on other people, I've just never been one to pull them off.

1. Birkenstocks Ohhh before you think I'm crazy, check out this Vogue article. In the words of Pinterest, "Go home, fashion. You're drunk."
The 90's called. They want their terrible idea back. Speaking of the 90's...

2. High waisted cut-off shorts I NEVER thought this terrible fad would come back until I spotted it on every Jr. High girl at the mall. Not only does it look awkward, but talk about having a wedgie all the time.

3. Blazers Okay, before you ignore me - I LOVE blazers... on other women. To me, it feels like I'm wearing a straight jacket. And I don't like feeling all trapped, you know, in case I get attacked from behind and I need to flail my arms above my head. It could happen.

4. A button-up shirt with a sweater over Again, another look that looks adorable on other women but makes me feel like I'm being strangled by my clothes.

5. Oxfords This one I don't get at all and I think it's just me. I've seen so many women, even fashionable friends of mine, have these shoes. My college roommate even mentioned she had a pair which is why I included them in the style post the other day but I personally would chose a pair of plain cognac flats before I bought a pair of these.
So what do you guys think? Am I just totally unfashionable and now you'll never read my blog again? Or do you agree that Birkenstocks are quite possibly the worst thing ever to happen to the fashion world?

Styling Maternity Travelwear

One of my favorite things to do is put together some outfit inspirations for people I know. I've styled my college roommate before with a birthday outfit here and again for their family shoot here. So when she text'd me yesterday that she's visiting Illinois and Vermont next week and needs some outfit inspiration, I jumped at the chance. She's "very pregs" with her second boy so comfort is a must. Plus since she already has one adorable son, running around after a toddler means no heels.

Since traveling with a child means a TON more stuff, I wanted to chose some outfits that can be interchangeable. Lots of neutral colors with pops of bright statement jewelry (which is a lot smaller to pack than different jackets, tanks, etc.) The weather is supposed to be 60-70 degrees with extremely high humidity so layers will be a must. Also, Sarah has very curly hair so I think a low braided chignon would be perfect for controlling the frizz.

The only bad thing about styling other people is that now I want those turquoise earrings and that emerald clutch...

Fall, Fashion and Anniversary Gifts

I'm on fashion kick right now. I don't know if it's the approaching fall season (more on that in a minute) or the fact that Brian has given me the greatest anniversary gift of all (more on that in a minute) but I'm all about creating some new looks.

So first of all, fall. I love summer. I really do. I loved it more when I lived in So Cal and the beach was 30 minutes away. But when it's over 100 degrees outside, putting on clothes is always extremely unappealing. So when fall rolls around, I get excited for wearing dresses and accessorizing with scarves and boots and all that good stuff.

Now... the anniversary gift. Since Brian just started a new job a few weeks ago, his schedule has been sort of hit and miss. We had made plans for sushi on our anniversary but he ended up working late so we scratched those. He made things better by showing up with a dozen roses and the BEST anniversary gift ever.

He gave me...

...a shopping trip...

...with him.

Can you believe that??? He actually said that he would take me shopping. Let's just go over how important this is...

There has only ever been one person in the world who has been able to keep up with my shopping habits. Not my mother. Not even my sisters. That would be Rebekah Cherry. She and I once went shopping for 9 hours straight and at the end of the day, we felt like we could've kept going but the stores were closing.

Brian hates shopping. I mean, doesn't every guy? He hates looking for clothes, even if he needs them. He'd rather wear holes in every piece of clothing he owns than shop for new stuff. And believe me, when he has a favorite item of clothing he literally wears it until it falls apart. I once caught him super-gluing the sole onto his favorite pair of New Balance shoes.

So the fact that he has offered to take me shopping because he knows how much I like it and he wants to spend time with me was just about the most thoughtful thing he could've given me.

All that to say... I'm doing some shopping online today so I can get an idea of what I want when I hit the stores. I mean I know this is a thoughtful gift but I can't expect him to last 9 hours.

Maybe 4 at the most. ;)

Disneyland Style - Day 2 Outfits

I'm allowed to have multiple options for Allie, right? I mean, come on. How can you pick??? Too adorable...

Untitled #34

Once again, comfort, warmth, and expensive things that are out of my price range. Unless I get the boots for my  birthday... then we already know what'll be on my Christmas list, don't we?

As you can see, I'm kinda obsessed with this wine/plum/burgundy color. It just says "fall" to me which is how I'm coping with the fact that summer is over.

P.S. Thanks to a very generous sister of mine, Allie will be sporting that green jacket and polka dot sweater in 3-5 business days! Well maybe not because it's still blazing hot outside.

Disneyland style

It's been awhile since I've done an outfit post and since I know you're all dying to know how I'll style myself and my baby to Disneyland, here's a sneak peek...

Disneyland

The idea here is comfort. I want Allie to be warm and I want to be able to relax in stretchy pants and a loose sweater. The top knot is because I'll be too lazy to do my hair. The small studs are because I don't want to add to the excitement of Disneyland by having to visit the hospital because my 1 year old ripped my earlobes off. And those boots... I'm dreaming of them. Hoping that a certain husband *AHEM* will be ever so generous for a certain devoted, loving, caring, amazing wife's birthday.

*Note: Allie is actually going to be wearing a Minnie hoodie with a Minnie and Mickey shirt because it's Disneyland. Otherwise her aunties might be unhappy.

Allie's First Birthday

Warning: Long post ahead!

Allie turned one. Nope. Still hasn't sunk in. At any rate, her birthday party was a chance to do all the cute stuff on Pinterest that I'm still lamenting I was unable to do at my own wedding because I hadn't discovered it yet. I still think people who got married before Pinterest should get a second wedding. For free.

Anyway, my older sister had come to visit the week before so she helped with the decorations. I sat and punched the circles out while she cut the tissue paper into fringes. She also brought the pink straws which were leftover from the baby shower that she threw for us.

The night before the party, she, my mom and I did the cones, which were surprisingly easy. I bought the cones pre-made and we dipped them in chocolate and added the nuts and sprinkles.

I had been collecting clear bottles for a few weeks. Added some lace, jute, ribbon and fresh flowers: voila!

Those were all pictures from my phone... now for the 1 year photo shoot of the leading lady herself. Pictures by Brian Reiner Photography
